The Functional Gut Clinic is now accepting self-referrals (self-pay patients only) for Hydrogen and Methane Breath Testing. Breath tests can be used to help in the diagnosis of conditions which may be causing or contributing to your abdominal (tummy) symptoms. We can use Hydrogen and Methane Breath Testing to help diagnose:
- Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth: A condition where gut bacteria overpopulate the small intestine. These bacteria can ferment ingested food and drink, producing waste products that can cause troublesome symptoms of bloating, altered bowel habits, flatulence and abdominal discomfort.
- Lactose Malabsorption: Lactose is the sugar found in milk and dairy products. Lactose malabsorption is a condition where the enzyme lactase, which breaks down the sugar lactose, becomes depleted in the small bowel. If lactase is depleted this process will be impaired leading to fermentation of lactose in the colon which in many individuals may cause abdominal discomfort, altered bowel habits, bloating and flatulence.
- Fructose Malabsorption: Fructose is a naturally occurring sugar found in many plants and fruits. In some individuals, this sugar is not completely broken down and absorbed in the small intestine, reaching the colon. Fructose is highly fermentable in the colon and the by products of this fermentation can cause symptoms of abdominal discomfort, altered bowel habits, bloating and flatulence.
If you would like to self-refer for any of the above breath tests:
Step 1: Email or post with details of their clinical condition and the test they would like performed. The request will be triaged by our clinical staff and we will contact you if we need more information or if we think the test is inappropriate.
Step 2: A member of our admin team will contact you to arrange an appointment that suits you. You will be given information on how to prepare for the test and what the investigations involves.
Step 3: Attend for your breath test.
Please Note: Self-referrals can speed up the diagnostic process and if you need a referral to discuss the results with a Doctor, we can also arrange this for you to make sure that in addition to a firm diagnosis you can then receive appropriate treatment from an expert Consultant or Dietitian.
If you have any queries or questions then please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org
