What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome?

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a bit of a conundrum. It is a term used to describe a whole host of symptoms which may have a whole host of causes. We don’t tend to use the term in our clinic, we try and find out the underlying cause of your symptoms.

IBS effects a quarter of the population and are often diagnosed between the ages of 20 – 50.

Causes Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Causes Irritable Bowel Syndrome:

As stated above, the cause of IBS as a whole is not properly understood but symptoms indicative of IBS can be caused by a varied combination of the subsequent factors. Below are a series of causes:

Abnormal relaxation and contractions of the intestinal muscles, this can cause food to travel too slowly or quickly throughout the GI tract, which may cause muscle spasms.

Miscommunication between the how the nerves in the body and gut talk to each other.

Imbalance of the bacteria (bugs) in the bowel which can occur from previous infections, food poisoning or antibiotic use, for example.

Low pain threshold for distension in the intestines may result in a build up of gas and fluids in the large bowel and causes discomfort.
