The Functional Gut Clinic: Manchester – Now open to see patients!

After nearly 12-months of preparation, planning, building and inspections, FGC Manchester is now live and raring to go to provide our services to patients and healthcare professionals of the North West. As with our London clinic, we will be providing an array of state of the art physiological investigations to assess a broad range of patients with gastro-intestinal disorders including gastro-oesophageal reflux, irritable bowel syndrome, functional dyspepsia, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, constipation and incontinence.

We will be providing the following testing services:

Using our new state of the art Agilent gas chromatography system and new test tube based kits, we can perform the most accurate (<1ppm) assessment of breath samples for all of the different substrates (lactulose, lactose, fructose, glucose and sucrose) to assess small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and carbohydrate mal-absorption / intolerance. The new breath test kits are ideal for use as postal kits so patients can do the tests at their convenience in their own home or in the clinic. Each kit contains everything needed to perform the test and we have online support / instructional video to guide patients through the process. Results are turned around with 24-hours of receipt and sent via a secure portal.

We use the smallest diameter catheters on the market for patient comfort whilst still providing 32 pressure channels and 16 impedance channels to assess oesophageal function and bolus clearance in patients with suspected dysmotility in high definition. This test can identify the whole range of motility disorders such as achalasia, assess pre-operative motility and suitability for anti-reflux surgery and objectively assess behavioural conditions such as rumination and aerophagia. In addition we now offer biofeedback therapy for these difficult to treat conditions so that your patients get more than a diagnosis we can often help them to overcome these troublesome symptoms.

The gold standard of gastro-oesophageal reflux testing with the ability to assess acid reflux, non-acid reflux, gastric acidity (to assess PPI effectiveness and achlorhydria), bolus clearance, laryngo-pharyngeal reflux (using special designed pharyngeal probes) and aerophagia / supra-gastric belching. We can test on or off medication and there are no dietary restrictions meaning patients can eat provocative meals to exacerbate their usual symptoms. This provides a much more accurate test from which meaningful clinical decisions can be made.

Using 22 channels of pressure and and a integral rectal balloon we can study the neuromuscular function of the ano-rectum in great detail. It also allows us to perform intuitive and effective biofeedback for patients with both evacuatory dysfunction and incontinence. We also provide complementary services such as endo-anal ultrasound and pudendal nerve studies.

The only way to assess gastric empting, small bowel transit, colonic transit and whole gut contractility / pH profiles in patients with unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms. We have been at the forefront of research with this device completing collaborative studies to establish normal ranges in over 200 healthy subjects, proving the utility of using the device to establish specific pathophysiology in IBS, Gastroparesis and Constipation. We have also shown that the SmartPill can provide objective evidence of drug efficacy and dietary intervention. We are the only independent clinic to offer this service at present.

A safe (no radiation) and effective method which validates against scintigraphy to assess gastric emptying of solid or semi solid meals in patients with suspected delayed gastric emptying. The C13 substrates can also be used to assess Helicobacter pylori status.

The only centre in the UK to offer IBSchek which is a revolutionary blood test that identifies antibodies caused by a previous gut infection which in turn can effect gut motility and cause prolonged IBS symptoms. A positive diagnosis with IBSchek identifies an organic cause of IBS symptoms and helps to focus therapy on eradicating the cause of the antibody build up and to improve motility if it has become impaired.

Our team comprises Clinical Scientists, Physiologists, Physiotherapist, Nurses and Dietitians so we can contribute not only to the accurate diagnosis of your patients symptoms but help to contribute to the treatment and long term follow up where needed.
